Tarapith Temple is located in the village of Tarapith, in the Birbhum district of West Bengal, India. It sits near the town of Rampurhat, about 6 km away, and lies roughly 220-250 km north of Kolkata, depending on the route you take.
The temple stands on the banks of the Dwarka River, a small seasonal river that flows past the sacred cremation ground adjoining the temple complex.
Tarapith is one of the revered Shakti Peeths, sacred sites associated with the goddess Sati. According to Hindu tradition, when Lord Shiva carried Sati’s body in grief, parts of it fell at various places across the Indian subcontinent. Each of these places became a Shakti Peeth.
At Tarapith, legend says Sati’s third eye (some traditions say her eyeball) fell to the earth. The name “Tarapith” itself reflects this: “Tara” means star or eye, and “Pith” means sacred seat. The presiding deity is Goddess Tara, a fierce and compassionate form of Shakti.
The temple is also closely linked with the saint Bamakhepa (Vamakhepa), a celebrated mystic who lived and practiced here in the 19th century. His ashram is nearby and remains a major pilgrimage stop.
The nearest railway station is Rampurhat Junction, about 6-8 km from the temple. It is well connected to Kolkata (Howrah and Sealdah), and several express and passenger trains run on this route. From the station, you can take an auto-rickshaw, e-rickshaw, or taxi to the temple.
Tarapith is well connected by road. From Kolkata, the drive takes about 5 to 6 hours, usually via Durgapur and Suri or via the NH-12/NH-114 corridor. Buses run from Kolkata, Siliguri, Asansol, and other towns in the region to Rampurhat and Tarapith.
The closest major airports are Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata (around 5 hours by road) and Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport in Durgapur (roughly 2.5 to 3 hours by road). From either airport, you can hire a cab or continue by train.
